On Tuesday, June 26, 2018 Mary Mamatas, age 89, of Penn Hills, PA passed away peacefully at her home with family by her side. Mary was born on January 26, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA. Raised in Monessen, PA, Mary graduated from Monessen High School in 1947 as the Class Valedictorian and received a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh where she graduated Cum Laude with a Mathematics degree. Mary was recruited by General Electric Boston MA but became a teacher and taught math at Monessen High School and Verona High School, and later as a substitute math teacher at Penn Hills High School. Beloved wife of the late Gus E. Mamatas, Mary is survived by her children Emanuel (Ginny) Mamatas of Washington, D.C. and Andrea (Mike) Perkins of Richmond VA; and her sister, Argie Xilas (Koklanaris) of Pittsburgh PA.
Mary is also survived by her grandchildren; Alexa and Dean Mamatas, Alaina and Christopher Perkins and many loving nieces and nephews. Mary was an active member of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, Pan-Icarian Foundation - Icaros Chapter, Penn Hills Senior Center, Penn Hills Book Club, Penn Hills YMCA, and Silver Sneakers. Friends will be received on Friday, June 29, 2018, from 4:00-8:00 PM at English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc, 378 Maryland Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139, where a Trisagion Service will be held at 6 pm. A Funeral Service will be on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, Oakmont where visitation will start at 9:30 am. Interment will be private.
