Alice Buchanan Obituary

Alice Reed Buchanan

Age 99, of Oakmont, PA, widow of Dr. Gibson P. Buchanan, died November 7, 2020. She was born in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Alexander and Gertrude Reed, and attended Ellis School. She was a graduate of Wheaton College in Norton, MA, and a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. She worked in public relations for Children’s Hospital and in human resources at the Carnegie Museum of Art. She was involved in many civic and cultural organizations and had a deep, lifelong love for Pittsburgh. She married Dr. Buchanan in 1985 and immediately became an important and beloved member of the Buchanan family.  She and Dr. Buchanan lived at Longwood at Oakmont for more than 20 years where she was an active member of its community. She lived an energetic life, taking vigorous daily walks, practicing yoga regularly, and, from an early age, skiing with a passion. Throughout her life she was a fearless and enthusiastic traveler, visiting countries on nearly every continent. She also was a devoted listener of classical music and an avid reader. She leaves her sister Tolli Pugh of Cincinnati; her nieces, Nancy Sooper of Boston, MA, and Leslie Maloney of Cincinnati, OH and nephews, Andy Kornfeld of Jupiter, FL and Reed Pugh of Boston, MA; her four Buchanan children and their spouses, Peggy Buchanan and Lou Golden of Hartford, CT, Cathryn Buchanan and Jeffrey Pierce of Monroe, WA, David Buchanan and Mary Horst of Boston, MA, and Thomas Buchanan and Mary Beth Buchanan of Pittsburgh; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. She also leaves many close friends, including Nancy Noyes of Oakmont and the “Thursday Lunch Group” from Longwood. Besides Dr. Buchanan, she was predeceased by her sister Tilly Kornfeld, and her brother, Alexander Reed, Jr. A celebration of her life will be held at time of her 100th birthday.  The family extends its thanks to the caring Longwood staff at Gardenside and at the Hanna Healthcare Center. Donations in her memory may be made to the Pittsburgh Foundation, Alice and Gibson Buchanan Fund or a charity of your choice.  Arrangements entrusted to English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139.
