Joan Fisher Obituary

Joan Snively Fisher

Age 94, of Oakmont, on Monday, March 24, 2025. Joan Snively Fisher was a resident of Longwood at Oakmont and a lifelong resident of Point Breeze and the eastern suburbs, spending winters at her family home in Orlando, Florida and summers at the family farm on the shore. She was the only child of Howard Wakefield Fisher and Grace Snively Fisher. She is survived by longtime friends and cousins and is preceded in death by her cousin Martha Corson.

Ms. Fisher graduated from Pennsylvania College for Women, now Chatham University, and the University of Pittsburgh for her graduate degree in Education. She taught at St. Edmund’s Academy in Squirrel Hill before beginning her long career in teaching and administration in Penn Hills at Dible and Roberts where she was Vice Principal.

The essence of Joan was her creativity and her love of animals, nature and beautiful surroundings. Her teaching always contained opportunities for her students to pursue their own creativity in writing and art. Joan loved writing and a pad and pencil were always close by to express her thoughts, which included everything from politics and children’s stories to history and poetry. She had many of her poems published and wrote a collection of adult poems titled “A Collection of Sunbeams”. She also wrote stories and poems for children and published a book titled “Dandelions and Other Rhymes”, as well as a self-illustrated book of animal limericks.

She was accomplished in a variety of media painting, scherenschnitte (paper cutting), interior decorating, flower arranging, gardening and miniature rooms. Joan was a former member of the Archive, Worship and Arts, Garden Committee and Beulah Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon. She created original scherenschnitte ornaments of the Christmas story displayed on the trees at the church. She especially enjoyed her participation in the creation of a Biblical mural in the church gymnasium.

Joan was involved in many community volunteer activities and when she moved to Longwood she contributed with her talents in writing, art and gardening. A lifetime member of the Allegheny County PA State Education Association, former Churchill Garden Club member, an active participating member of the Guild of American Paper Cutters, Hood and Tassel, Dilworth Society at Chatham University and College Club of Pittsburgh.
