Julia Phyllis Kokales
Age 99, of Oakmont, passed peacefully in the presence of her family on Monday, July 22, 2024. Loving mother of Mary Ann (Leone) Monticone and Nicholas James Kokales; grandmother of James (Lauren) and Dena; aunt of Marieann, Andrea, Ian, Nick, Mary Elizabeth, Tom and Ann Marie; daughter of the late Nicholas and Antigone Chitakis, sister of the late Antony Chitakis, Frances Rossi and Constance Ritchie.
Julia was born in Chios, Greece. Her family migrated to Australia when she was 10 months old. She met the love of her life, Jim an American airman stationed in her hometown of Townsville, Australia. They were married in Townsville on July 26, 1943. The couple moved to Jim’s hometown of Oakmont shortly thereafter. Julia was the consummate mother and homemaker. Among her interests were cooking and baking, fashion, collecting antiques and travel. She loved her Church and attended services and Bible study on a regular basis. Julia was a long-time member of the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church in Oakmont, the St. Barbara’s Philoptochos Society, Christian Women’s Club of Monroeville, and the Australian Wives Club of Pittsburgh.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 PM, at English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139. Additional visitation will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, 12 Washington Ave., Oakmont, PA from 10:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at the Oakmont Verona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Julia’s name to Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church.
