Nancy Sprague Obituary

Nancy P. Sprague was born in Columbus, Ohio, attended the Columbus Girls School and Miami University at Oxford where she graduated, met and married William E. Sprague from Canton, Ohio.  Married in 1949, they initially resided in Cleveland.  In the 1950’s, Bill and Nancy had 3 boys, moving to Pittsburgh in 1957. In 1961, Nancy Sprague became a member of the Pittsburgh Junior League and a member of PCIV – Pittsburgh Council for International Visitors. She and her family hosted many international visitors in their Mt. Lebanon home, and she led tours through Pittsburgh.  She was active with the Home for Crippled Children and was Chairwoman for Americans Abroad. Nancy screened applicants interested in living abroad for American Field Service.  Her main volunteer work was Planned Parenthood where she held numerous positions, and contributed for many years.  Nancy was a long term member of the Pittsburgh Poetry Forum.  It was her great pleasure to introduce Richard Wilbur, American Poet Laurate and Pulitzer Winner - and her cousin, to the Pittsburgh Poetry Forum for an evening performance.  Nancy, from mid-life to the end of her life, came to love great ideas.  That was her company, great ideas, friends, family, and a very loving dog.  Reading, which she did every day, was her way to reach great ideas. William E. Sprague, Nancy’s husband for 53 years, died in 2002 at 79 yrs. of age.  Nancy continued to reside at their last residence – 52 Wayside Lane, Longwood at Oakmont until 2010.  She moved from Wayside Lane to the Hanna Health Care Center at Longwood for the final 10 years of her life.  Nancy passed away from COVID complications on November 27th at 94 years of age. Nancy is survived by her 3 children: Scott Sprague (Renee), Andy Sprague (Janell) and David Sprague (Karen). As granddad Dohron Sprague called them – the SAD Bunch!  In addition Nancy is survived by 7 grandchildren – and their children.  Grandkids include Dean and Katie Sprague – Scott and Renee’s children; Andy’s/Janell’s kids - Nyah Gueye and Rose Sprague; and Dave/Karen’s children - Jesse Sprague, Megan Roybal and Cody Sprague.  There are also 12 great grandchildren. Nancy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and in return her family and many, many friends – loved her. Arrangements are private and entrusted to English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Salvation Army or charity of one’s choice.
