Richard S. Wood
Richard Wood, age 81, a resident of University Square Apartments in Oakland, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at UPMC Montefiore Hospital.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Edna and W. Emory Wood, Richard, known to his friends as "Dick," pursued a lifelong dedication to education and travel. He graduated from Temple University and went on to earn his master’s degree from the University of Scranton. His academic journey brought him to Pittsburgh, where he began pursuing a Ph.D. and ultimately made the city his home.
Dick dedicated 30 years of his life to the University of Pittsburgh, working as an advisor and counselor for the Semester at Sea program, as well as serving in the Dean’s office. Known for his linguistic abilities, he spoke French, German, and even studied Ancient Greek. His passion for learning and exploring the world was evident in his many journeys, as he traveled extensively through the Semester at Sea program, circling the globe numerous times. Along the way, he developed a deep love for collecting model trains, a hobby that brought him joy throughout his life.
Though largely a private person, Dick was a mentor to many and a cherished friend to all who knew him. He was particularly fond of his loyal Labrador, Daisy, who was always by his side. His quiet kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to work with him, and his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched.
Richard is survived by his cousins Jean Harrigan and Shelly, Kim, and Elizabeth Harrigan of Clinton, Connecticut, as well as numerous friends and former colleagues. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at 10 AM at St. Paul Cathedral, 108 N. Dithridge Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. A private interment will be held at Oak Lawn Cemetery Association in Wilkes-Barre, PA at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to English Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 378 Maryland Ave., Oakmont, PA 15139.
